Prestwold Natural Burial Ground

Nestled in a quiet, rural location within the historic Prestwold Estate in north Leicestershire.

Prestwold was one of the very first natural burial grounds in the Midlands, opening in 1999.  As such many areas are now beautiful woodland as the trees planted in remembrance over the years have matured.  This ensures a wonderful natural habitat for many forms of wildlife.

The land at Prestwold has been owned by the Packe-Drury-Lowe family for many generations and the area has had many uses over the years. Whilst much of the estate remains agricultural, there has been diversification including the introduction of a solar farm. Land close to the burial ground has also had many varied uses, including a Victorian brick works and clay pit. In more recent years the local authority has used part of the Estate for municipal waste disposal. These areas have now been managed to create totally wild areas to encourage the biodiversity of both flora and fauna.

Prestwold is well positioned for many towns and cities including Loughborough, Nottingham and Melton Mowbray.  Although in the countryside the burial ground is well signposted, and directions are also available here.

In recent years a beautiful new section has opened, offering exceptional views.  Furthermore, the burial ground offers the newly developed Cherry Glade where a cherry tree is planted to commemorate each burial of cremated remains that takes place in this area.  In forthcoming years this will become a sea of blossom at key times of the year.

Furthermore, in 2023 a new natural burial ground, The Orchards at Prestwold, has been opened. This burial ground offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside in a wonderful, tranquil, setting. This burial ground will be developed to maximise care for the environment, encourage nature, and promote biodiversity.
